A second language counts toward the diploma

Of the 100 credits needed to graduate, 10 may be taken from a list that includes second languages. A 30-level language course also counts toward the separate 10 credits of 30-level coursework.

  • Physical Education 10 (3 credits)
  • Career and Life Management (3 credits)
  • 10 credits in any combination from: Career and Technology Studies (CTS) courses, Fine Arts courses, Second Languages courses, Physical Education 20 and/or 30, Knowledge and Employability courses, Registered Apprenticeship Program courses, Locally developed courses in CTS, fine arts, second languages or Knowledge and Employability occupational courses
  • 10 credits in any 30-level course (in addition to a 30-level English Language Arts and a 30-level Social Studies course as specified above)

The university publishes a list of courses that may be used as a 30-level language other than English. Chinese courses appear on it.

Alexander Rutherford Scholarship

A language mark can count toward the Rutherford Scholarship

The award is calculated on the average of five designated courses in each of Grades 10, 11 and 12. An English Language Arts or Français course is required at every level and cannot be replaced; among the courses that may be used for the rest, Alberta Student Aid includes a language other than the one already counted.

French & International Languages Course Challenge Guide for Students & Family

Speaking a language is not enough to earn credit for it

A student who already knows a language can challenge the course for credit without taking it — but must demonstrate the full 30-level outcomes, in writing as well as in speech.

A Language Course Challenge gives you the opportunity to earn high school credits for a language you already know.

You do not need to take the course at school before challenging it. But you do need to be ready to demonstrate the full 30-level course outcomes.

Knowing how to speak the language is not enough. You must be able to read and write in the language at the 30-level expected for the course.

If you successfully complete the process, you receive a final mark and credits for the 30-level course. You may also receive credits for the 10- and 20-level courses, if applicable.

The Mandarin bilingual program runs to Grade 9

The CBE publishes its Chinese (Mandarin) Bilingual Program as Kindergarten to Grade 9. What follows Grade 9 is a question for the CBE and for the high school a student is entering.
